Dalai Lama XIV

Today I had the privilege of hearing the Dalai Lama speak. He is such an insightful man and it was a pleasure to hear some of the wise things he had to say. One thing that stuck out to me most was when he explained that egocentrism and having a self-centered attitude leads to destruction of the self and I couldn’t agree more. I have seen this happen to some of the smartest, wisest, good-hearted, beautiful people that I know (or should I say knew). I realized that when someone puts themselves before others they shut themselves out from the people around them. That is why I say that I knew these people instead of know these people; I have decided to remove myself from their presence because they only bring negative energy toward me. I know for a fact that when a person’s ego becomes bigger than everything else in their life, their life begins to fall apart.

In general, he was very insightful and captivating. He even cracked a joke or two and wore a Loyola baseball type of cap throughout the talk.

  •  Dalai Lama quotes (quotes to life by) :)
  • 1- Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.
  • 2- If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.
  • 3- If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.
  • 4- My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.
  • 5- Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
  • 6- The ultimate authority must always rest with the individual’s own reason and critical analysis.
  • 7- We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection.
  • 8- We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.
  • 9- Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.
  • 10- If you have fear of some pain or suffering, you should examine whether there is anything you can do about it. If you can, there is no need to worry about it; if you cannot do anything, then there is also no need to worry.
  • 11- If you don’t love yourself, you cannot love others. You will not be able to love others. If you have no compassion for yourself then you are not able of developing compassion for others.
  • 12- Human potential is the same for all. Your feeling, “I am of no value”, is wrong. Absolutely wrong. You are deceiving yourself. We all have the power of thought – so what are you lacking? If you have willpower, then you can change anything. It is usually said that you are your own master.
  • 13- We must recognize that the suffering of one person or one nation is the suffering of humanity. That the happiness of one person or nation is the happiness of humanity.
  • 14- Through violence, you may ‘solve’ one problem, but you sow the seeds for another.
  • 15- As people alive today, we must consider future generations: a clean environment is a human right like any other. It is therefore part of our responsibility toward others to ensure that the world we pass on is as healthy, if not healthier, than we found it.
  • 16- To conquer oneself is a greater victory than to conquer thousands in a battle.
  • 17- There is a saying in Tibetan, “Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength.”
No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful experience is, if we lose our hope, that’s our real disaster.
  • 18- The creatures that inhabit this earth-be they human beings or animals-are here to contribute, each in its own particular way, to the beauty and prosperity of the world.
  • 19- A spoon cannot taste of the food it carries. Likewise, a foolish man cannot understand the wise man´s wisdom even if he associates with a sage.
  • 20- In our struggle for freedom, truth is the only weapon we possess.

.Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

“Love yourself before you love others…It’s worth the time and effort to love yourself before you love others because only then can you really give them the best version of you” -Angie Venetos

GMMT Tournament Recap

This weekend was tons of fun. I am proud to say my team and I achieved another victory in a Greek tournament against an extremely talented team from the Detroit Michigan area.

It feels great to be ending this weekend on such a fabulous note. I’m SUPER proud of all of us ladies! We have come such a long way as a team and have grown to be as close as sisters! It’s crazy to think its been just around 10 years since we began competing together in these tournaments. This tournament was one that will stick out to me much more than any other because each one of us was a necessary ingredient to our success! I just have to say thanks to all the ladies for making this weekend so much fun, LOVE YOU ALL :)

I ended up playing much better than I have in a really long time, I’ve been working out, Can you tell…

The night before the championship I had two games and then went out for my best friend Kristen’s Birthday….

Kristen and I last year during April

This year, for Kristen's birthday (Me and Sarah)

Friday night Paul and I went to Roka Akor Sushi in Chicago…

Overall, it was a very fun, weekend! But I have to make this post short, Finals are next week and everything is due for me both this week and next week. Time to get cracking! :)

After my 4 mile run of course… :)

How was your weekend? Any special plans? Any special events coming up for u?

Rules to live by…

<!–

–>

1. don’t panic. don’t take anything, not even these words (and especially not yourself), too seriously.
2. never stop thinking.. if someone ever says to you ‘you need to stop thinking so much’ just ignore them and keep thinking deeper… your mind is the most important tool you have, if you stop using it, it will atrophy. FACT.
3. daydream as much as possible, even if it’s only for a few seconds at a time. stare into space blankly and don’t ever punish yourself for doing it. there’s no such thing as wasting time.
4. don’t be afraid to talk about anything. ask questions, and demand answers.
5. everyone is original. every life experience is case sensitive and unique. every thing you do makes you more YOU than anyone else has ever been.
6. stop rushing. take your time and enjoy every moment.
7. don’t let anyone tell you what to believe. discover ‘religion’ for yourself.. it should never be taught, only found.
8. talking to yourself is healthy. who else do you have more in common with?
9. we will always be in a transitional phase. look around you and know that everything will be replaced at some point.. this existence is only temporary.
10. if someone else has already said it better, don’t be afraid to quote them.
11. there is no such thing as time. there is only your life- earlier today you were born and death is predicted later in the evening.
12. every now and then take something that you see everyday and try to see it in a different light. renew its existence.
13. be happy… but don’t force it. that defeats the purpose. discover what is making you unhappy, and change it.
14. you will always succeed in trying.
15. we are all crazy. every person you read about in the history books, already know, or will maybe meet on the street, has or had some kind of ‘disorder’…you just have to learn how to use yours.
16. we are all about as similar as we are different.
17. ideas are just as valuable as people. why do you think we keep making people? we hope new people will have new ideas to share- so don’t let everyone down by keeping yours to yourself.
18. words will always be just words. only the feelings are real
19. ask a child for advice, and never speak down to them. they may not know much, but they know what is important.
20. prove you’re alive. remind the world you are still here.

New day, New start

Don’t expect things to happen at once, each new day can be the start of your eventual success

Amen to that! I’m starting to treat my body better than I have before but I must admit at times its hard to not be so hard on myself. I truly am one of those people who are their own worst enemy. The reason I am so hard on myself is because I truly believe I have the capabilities of achieving anything I want and I believe I can do it perfectly with practice of course. Obviously, these expectations are unattainable because perfection is subjective and until I have a clearly defined definition of perfect I can’t achieve my version of perfection.

Its time for me to realize that I can’t be perfect.

But what I can be is the perfect version of myself and define what perfection is to me. When I look in the mirror I can wake up each day be proud of myself, my self-control, my accomplishments, my decisions, my hard work and my dedication to school, my work-out ethic and my healthy food choices. TO ME being perfect are those things: pride in myself, containing self control, attempting to accomplish small goals each day, making good decisions, being healthy, treating my body like a temple and helping others in need. This idea of perfection may be different to someone else and that’s just fine. What may be the perfect body, fitness plan or nutritional regiment to me may not be the perfect one for someone else.

The reality is then simple: Find what works for you and do what makes you FEEL good about who you are. If that means yoga, pilates, running, circuit training, or weightlifting for you than DO IT! As long as you are enjoying and loving what you are doing for yourself it just can’t be wrong (as long as its promoting a healthy result and lifestyle).

It can be overwhelming to set expectations that seem almost unattainable so I always tend to make small goals for myself throughout the day.

For breakfast today I treated myself right, I had an Apple paired with Edamame cranberry corn salad.

This Edamame Succotash from Whole Food is to die for! One of my favorite meals for lunch.

What are your small goals for today? Mine are…

  • To finish my Early Christianity Paper
  • Run 4 miles at a challenging pace.
  • Make myself an amazing salad for dinner (spinach, strawberries, feta, peppers, etc.)

Last night I had a weight lifting session with Paul and that’s why I’m switching it up with cardio for today. Tomorrow is Good Friday for all the Orthodox Christians which means I will be coloring eggs tonight with my mom and I will probably invite Paul to help out. Tomorrow my schedule is full but I will be attending church like I always do on Good Friday. Saturday night I will be in church for the 11:30 P.M. service that goes into Easter Sunday. It’s a gorgeous procession to attend…

This is a church in Greece on Sunday Morning at around 1:00 A.M!

Sophia and I on Easter, 2011

Zuzu and I. Her real name is Alexandra but everyone calls her ZUZU from the movie it’s a wonderful life, George Bailey’s daughter is ZUZU (the one with the flower petals).

Zuzu looking for the easter eggs during the hunt! Can you find the egg in this pic?

Thinking about last year’s Easter I was reminded of how my Grandmother was with us. Now that she has passed I hope and pray that she blesses my whole family and I with a great new start after we celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection this Sunday :)

Next week is another Greek Tournament Called the George Mougolias Memorial Tournament. Last year, my dad and I snapped a photo after we won the championship…
I’ll be ready, been working out hard!

I hope the weather gets nicer this week so I can practice shooting around again with Paul like I did this weekend.

Hope uou enjoy your Thursday!

Can’t wait to color eggs with Paul tonight while watching the Bulls (Derrick Rose better stop being a baby and play… or should I say stop having babies… did you all hear about he knocked up a girl!?)

Much Love-Ang

American Easter weekend Recap

So sorry for the lack of posting, I’ve only been neglecting my posts because I’ve been enjoying my long (4 day!) weekend with my family friends and man! I’ve been working out harder than before and really enjoying lifting these days, probably because I get an awesome trainer to help me out… Paul… :)

We headed to get paul’s passport this friday because he leaves for costa rica in may for a bachelor party… LUCKY DUCK…. but guess who booked Vegas?! Me that’s who!

Paul and I made awesome Blueberry smoothies this weekend after my biceps and triceps work out…

Blueberry smoothies for two!

  • 2 Containers of Greek Yogurt,
  • 2 cups of blueberries
  • 1 handful of frozen blueberries
  • Protein powder 2 cups
  • 3 handfuls of Spinach
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 1/2 tablespoon of Xanthan Gum
  • 2 cups of water
  • Topped with Greek Oikos Frozen Yogurt with Hunny (this is a necessary step because it just makes the smoothies super sweet!)

My workouts this week have been AMAZING. I’m totally getting back on track. I have finally found the culprit that has been affecting my ability to complete my long runs! I had my blood drawn last week and my Iron level was at ALERT LEVEL. UH OH, no wonder I can’t run for very long. Normal iron blood levels of adult women are 30 to 126 ug/dL mine was at 3!!!! I’ve started taking iron pills this week hopefully I’ll see an improvement in my runs within the next couple weeks.Check my workout long to see what I have been up to!

Anyways, Friday evening concluded with Sushi from Coast… again.. can’t help it, it’s just so good!

Although I would love to do an in-depth post of washington D.C. I want to wait until we hear back from the marrow organization about the mans condition. I don’t want to be sharing much about the experience until Paul gives me more of an OK feeling about it. But what I can tell you is he did bring me flowers after dropping me off from the airport. I would have expected this had Paul not been on the trip with me but was totally floored considering we went  to D.C. together! He told me that he really appreciated me being there for him through this process. Of course I would! why wouldn’t I? I respect him so much more than any other man in my past and that’s because he treats me better than anyone ever has.

Its simple: Respect, Give it, Get it. :)

Yesterday Paul’s parents treated us to Wildfire during lunchtime for American Easter! Greek Easter is next week and I can’t wait to share all of my Greek traditions with Paul :)

Much Love, Ang

N.H.I.B.T. Recap and a Small Taste of D.C.

My Ahepa Marrow teammates ended up pulling out victory for the tournament this past weekend…

I even ended up playing in the playoff game which I didn’t think was going to end up happening. I’m glad I changed my mind last minute!

I also so my favorite little basketball player at the tournament, little Justin Bieber look-a-like.

Sunday, Paul and I left for D.C. around 1:00 in the afternoon,

We heading for Capital Grille on Sunday, Wildfire for lunch the following day and ended Monday night at Sakura (a Japanese Steak house that has some of the best/fun servers ever)! That’s just a small taste of what is to come tomorrow.I will be doing an indepth recap tomorrow after class. The trip was a very emotional one for Paul and myself because of the medical procedure he was having done in order to try and save a man’s life. This man has Aplastic Anemia and needs a stem cell transplant and since paul was a very very good match he decided to do this procedure to try and save this man’s life. I do not want to rush this post what-so-ever so I will have to stop there for now.

Time for me to write  lesson plans now that I finished Yoga with my sister.

Paul’s coming over tonight to try the homemade guacamole I whipped up and work on some of his own assignments. Afterward we are making some blueberry smoothies and watching a movie. I can’t wait to share my Washington D.C. but I don’t want to rush that post whatsoever! I’ll “talk” to you all tomorrow after class :) Easter break is this weekend for me too, Yay for FOUR day weekends (no class Friday or Saturday)!

Much love, Ang :)
