The Power of Choice

“I can choose what affects me.”

I can choose what affects me.

I can choose to not be damaged.

I can choose to not be afraid.

I can choose to love everyone

I can choose to not let a person affect my happiness.

I can choose to look at mistakes as learning experiences.

I can choose to be confident.

I can choose to be a secure individual.

I can choose to be happy.

I can choose to feel loved. My Blog

I can choose to be kind to everyone around me.

I can choose to be motivated

I can choose to be respectable individual.

I can choose to love all that surrounds me- even the “negative” people

I can choose.

I have been realizing lately that I can choose to be either a positive or negative person because I can choose what affects me. Sometimes we are affected by people and their actions towards us but if we are hurt by someone we can choose to see it as a learning experience. Any “negative” experience you have is simply deemed negative because you tell yourself so. Why not look at a break up as an experience you can grow from? An expierence that gives you time to yourself, to learn about what you enjoy doing on your own?

If someone has hurt you lately by using harmful words, breaking up with you, or neglecting you you can choose to still look at your life in a positive way. Focusing your attention on the positives in your life is a triumph in itself. I am a firm believer that the more we focus on the positives in our life the more positive things will occur. For example, if you focus on a positive experience you had today (hitting a personal running record, starting a blog, making your little cousins smile) the more people will want to surround themselves with your positive energy and the happier you will become.

Focusing on the positives in your life is so important! By realizing that you have a choice to look at every experience as a positive experience even those hard experiences (like a break up or job loss) you will be an overall happier person. How can we look at a job loss or a break up in a positive way? It’s simple: Deem the experience as a learning experience, take something out of it for future use. If you were broken up with why not look at the break up as an opprotunity for others to get to know the amazing person you are? So often when we are in a relationship we forget to have fun with friends and family, Look at your break-up as an opportunity to rekindle the many relationships that may have dissolved while you  were with your significant other! We can choose to either be miserable about an experience or we can choose to see the positives that have come about as a result of the experience.

Bottom line: We all have power over our lives. It may be difficult to see, but it’s always there. We always have a choice

‎”Other things may change us, but we start and end with family”

This weekend my grandmother passed away.I could write a post about how much I will miss her and how sad I am about losing her but I know that my Yiayia would have wanted me to remember her with a big smile on my face.

All I can really say is this: Although this weekend was very hard for my family, my Yiayia’s passing away has given me the ability to see the legacy that has left with us (her three daughters, 3 son-in-laws and 9 grandchildren).  My grandmother gave all of us one enormous gift that I never realized until this weekend. She gave us the gift of being a truly CLOSE tight-knit family. I have realized this weekend that I take for granted how often I see my cousins, aunts and uncles. Heck, I see them almost as much as I see my immediate family. I guess it never really registered that some families never see their aunts, uncles, cousins or grandparents… I truly believe that since  she has made our family into a truly united and close family we are able to better cope with her passing away.

I truly believe that today would have been much, much harder had she not made us into this unified loving family that we are. That is the legacy of my grandmother, her ability to create a bond between so many people, a bond that has stayed strong and never faltered. I hope I can carry on this legacy for my own family someday, just like she would  have wanted.

Rest in peace Yiayia Sophia, You are the strongest women I have known and you will be missed greatly…

Yiayia's 9 grandkids and 3 son-in-laws :) we love you

A Personal Record!

I headed over to the gym today without a concrete plan of what my workout would look like…I hopped on the treadmill to start and ended up hitting a personal RECORD! I ran 5 miles at an average pace of 6.7 MPH which ended up making my average pace per mile 8:57! I’ve never ran 5 miles at an average pace below 9 minutes so I was pretty pumped! I ended up running 2 more miles at a slow 6MPH pace for a total of 8 big ones for today!

YAY for the PR!

Last night I went to a pretty decent Italian restaurant VIA VENETO (but its no MAGGIANOS!)… I should have went with the “purse shaped pear stuffed pasta” that I ordered last time but instead ordered the Gnocchi stuffed with ricotta and spinach in a tomato cream sauce. It wasn’t as good as I thought it would be but still alright… I had gift certificates that I needed to use for this restaurant so It wasn’t too big of a deal that I wasn’t very pleased with the meal. I think next time I go I’ll just stick to my favorite “purse-shaped” pasta dish… not sure why I switched!

This week I went out with friends almost every night (finally now that its getting a tad bit warmer!)…

Sophia from Raven Waves and I :)

I hung out with my friend Jeff this week and he let me play with his dogs! :) I just wish I had a little puppie to take with me on my runs!

As I promised, some pictures of my super blonde hair:

Pretty light huh? :) just it time for summer!

I never thought being Greek would let me pull of the Blond hair, but somehow I think it works lol…

Anyways, I’m about to go  get my nails fixed with Sophia from Raven Waves then will be heading out on a dinner date at a restaurant here in the city, I’ll let you know what the restaurant is called in my next post since I’m being taken out and surprised tonight :) yay I love surprises!

Hope your weekend is going great everyone!

1) What is your favorite OPI color nail polish? Not sure what color I should do for my nails today…

2) Have any of you hit Personal Records lately? If so what are they, I’d love to hear about them!

I just finished up a book I had been reading and am looking for a new one to read,3) What are some of your favorite books that you have read to better your life and health? I’m looking to read a book about bettering my life… any suggestions?

Gettin’ Those Guns!

Good Afternoon!

I decided to head over to the gym super early (well for me at least) for a 9:15 Spin class! My best friend Tracy dragged me over the gym at this outrageous hour BUT it was well worth it :)

Justine, Me and Tracy (in order)

The class lasted about an hour and the teacher was about ten times better than the Yoga instructor I had the day before. I LOVED the spin class and will definitely be going to MANY MANY more this summer! The scheduled time for the class is perfect because it goes until about 10:30 which will allow me to have the rest of the summer day to tan and lay out by the pool at my gym (when the weather starts getting better here that is!)

After the Spin class and my 1.5 mile walk I fueled up with half a banana, several strawberries and Oatmeal (the Quaker Organic Maple and Brown Sugar Pack)

YUMMY!

The one thing I can say since I’ve started doing more yoga and spinning (while still keeping up with my cardio runs) is the immense improvement I’ve seen in my upper body… I’m finally GETTIN’ THOSE GUNS  so I beat up all those meanies out there :) … yea right, I’m a lover not a fighter I swear ;)

Just a couple of tips: I never ever lift weights, all of the arm strength I’ve acquired these past 3 or 4 weeks has come from Yoga and running and some spinning. Also, I make sure that my form while running is good (meaning my arms don’t swing above my chest and I am not clenching my fists.) Keepin your upper body loose while running is key!

I'm finally a little TONED! :)

On a more “complainer” note, Chicago has had the crappiest May weather ever! I don’t mean to be so negative but seriously I am starting to doubt it will ever warm up… I can’t wait to just lay out by the pool…

But it doesn’t look like that will be happening before my summer school class starts on Tuesday :(

On a more positive note, I bought a new pair of jeans while in Arizona back in April and found a short shirt to pair the jeans with for a cute and casual summer look:

I also headed out with a few friends this weekend to celebrate a couple of Birthdays!

Ladies!

Kevin and I :)

Overall, the weekend and week has started off great. Hopefully the Bulls can pull off another big win tonight to make the week even better! You may remember that I went to the Bulls game last week. I absolutely loved the atmosphere over by the United Center so much that I’m thinking about heading over toward the United Center area tonight with some friends to watch the game!

LETS GO BULLS!

Do you enjoy Spin Class?

What do you fuel up with after a Spin Class?

What are some more arm toning secrets you can share with me?

Is it 45 degrees in your town/neighborhood like it is in mine right now? LOL… I hope not!

P.S. I dyed my hair even more blonde yesterday,I’ll post some pics  when I’m not all sweaty and gross from the gym!

Happy Hump Day!!!

Much Love- <3 Ang

Ashtanga Yoga Class Experience

I went to my second yoga class at the gym today. I tried out a different type of Yoga called Ashtanga Yoga.

Breakfast after yoga, Siggis Yogurt PLAIN with lots of Pumpkin Flax granola and Lots of fruit paired on the SIDE!

Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

Midday snack for me was a…

Paired with an Apple and Better N Butter… read my last post to find out the benefits of  eating APPLES! I also bought a new cereal today named one of the best breakfast cereals

Three Sisters Marshmallow Oaties
I also tried a new Luna Bar today and it’s one of the best ones yet…

Ice Oatmeal Raisin

I found that I enjoy the Hatha Yoga class I attended much better than the Ashtanga Yoga class.  I feel like Ashtanga Yoga was a lot more challenging and advance for me than Hatha Yoga was. I also felt like the teacher for the Hatha Yoga was a lot better… The teacher I had today was kinda flaky, not to be rude or anything but she was just a little odd LOL… I’d recommend Hatha Yoga for beginners and will be taking another Hatha Yoga class this week instead of the Ashtanga Yoga. Maybe once I become more flexible with the yoga moves I will move toward the Ashtanga Yoga… Some of the Yoga students in this class were absolutely CRAZY ADVANCED with their moves! It’s crazy to see what our bodies are capable of if we practice and take the time to strengthen them!

What are your favorite yoga DVD’s? Any you recommend that I buy? I really need to do more yoga, especially if I’m running.  I need to stretch more and I know doing yoga correctly can really help me running longer and faster!

Any tips for Yoga you would like to share? I’d love to hear them!

Also for all of you that are pretty heavy runners like me, how many days a week do you run and what does your weekly running schedule look like? Do you do long runs one day followed by shorter runs the next day? I’m interested in hearing some of your tips for running and yoga!

Time for my dinner date at a local restaurant, Hope your Tuesday is going fabulous, get ready for that BULLS GAME tomorrow!

When Hunger Strikes…

Grab an apple!

We’re told that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what exactly are the health benefits of apples? Here are ten reasons to heed the advice of that old proverb…

Bone Protection
French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.

Asthma Help
One recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once per month. Another study showed that children born to women who eat a lot of apples during pregnancy have lower rates of asthma than children whose mothers ate few apples.

Alzheimer’s Prevention
A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

Lower Cholesterol
The pectin in apples lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

Lung Cancer Prevention
According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples.

Breast Cancer Prevention
A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent.

Colon Cancer Prevention
One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.

Liver Cancer Prevention
Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.

Diabetes Management
The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body’s need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.

Weight Loss
A Brazilian study found that women who ate three apples or pears per day lost more weight while dieting than women who did not eat fruit while dieting.

I love Apples and I love pairing them with my favorite spread Better N Butter

Ten Health Benefit from LOVE & SEX

So I’ve been reading up on LOVE, cause it’s a subject I’m just OH-SO passionate about… I’ve discovered some interesting benefits from loving others and of course I decided to share them with you!

LOVE CAN…

  1. Reduces Stress: Love can be a very effective way of reducing stress levels. When in an intimate relationship, the adrenaline glands produce dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) hormone that acts as a stress buster. A passionate relationship relieves tension, reduces negative energy and produces a sense of well being. Furthermore, the support of someone who loves you can help you cope better when you are facing a stressor.
  2. Promotes mental health: The calming effect of dehydroepiandrosterone over the mind and body raises the growth of nerves. It is also helpful in restoring the growth of nerves which results in an improved memory recall.
  3. Anti Cancer effect: Married people have been found to have lower cancer rates than singles. A research conducted at the University of Iowa found that ovarian cancer patients who had a strong and satisfying relationship with their partners develop more white blood cells which are desirable in killing cancerous cells.
  4. Reduces Pain: Love results in more activation in the part of the brain that keeps pain under control. A study of 127,000 adults confirmed that married people were less likely to complain of headaches and back pain. The happier the marriage, the greater the effect. The reduced stress level also leads to pain relief, especially if you suffer from things such as chronic headaches.
  5. Better blood circulation: When talking to someone it finds attractive, your brain sends impulses to the heart making it pound faster than normal; this results in increased blood supply to the body, improved circulation and efficient working of all organs.
  6. Live longer: Lack of love causes social isolation which increases the risk of early death by up to five times. A study confirmed that married people live longer because they feel loved and connected as oppose to the isolated ones. Since 1979, the National Longitudinal Mortality Study has been studying more than a million subjects and found that unmarried people are being outlived by the married ones. Another study found that married people have shorter average hospital stays and fewer doctor’s visits. Researchers believe that this is due to that fact that people in good relationships take better care of themselves. Also, marriage contributes to a decline in drug abuse and heavy drinking, especially among young adults.
  7. Lowers blood pressure: According to a study in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, happily married people had the best blood pressure as compared to singles or unhappily married people. Study also found that the singles with a strong social network also did well in the blood pressure study.
  8. Reduced risk of heart diseases: Expressing your feelings of affection can reduce cholesterol levels. Human Communication Research found that people who expressed their feelings of affection for significant friends, relatives, and/or romantic partners had significantly lower cholesterol levels than those that didn’t. Lower cholesterol levels result in reduced chances of a heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases.
  9. Faster healing: Researchers found that wounds heal faster in people who are in a loving relationship. According to the study, the blister wounds healed nearly twice as fast in couples who were happy and calm compared to those who appeared hostile or depressed. Researchers also found that people who are in love are less likely to get sick by the viruses of cold and flu.
  10. Forever young: Dehydroepiandrosterone also acts as an “anti-aging” hormone, which produces feelings of youth and vitality. Adding to that, the increase blood flow to the skin due to the endorphins produced by the body when in love, helps keep it soft and smooth, and reduce the development of wrinkles.

Love is much more than just genes, chemicals and hormones. So if you are a person who is very much conscious about health and wellness, learn to love deeply and sincerely. If you want to live longer then learn to love harder!

SEX CAN….

1. Sex Relieves Stress

A big health benefit of sex is lower blood pressure and overall stress reduction, according to researchers from Scotland who reported their findings in the journal Biological Psychology. They studied 24 women and 22 men who kept records of their sexual activity. Then the researchers subjected them to stressful situations — such as speaking in public and doing verbal arithmetic — and noted their blood pressure response to stress. Those who had intercourse had better responses to stress than those who engaged in other sexual behaviors or abstained.

2. Sex Boosts Immunity

Good sexual health may mean better physical health. Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections.

3. Sex Burns Calories

Thirty minutes of sex burns 85 calories or more. It may not sound like much, but it adds up: 42 half-hour sessions will burn 3,570 calories, more than enough to lose a pound. Doubling up, you could drop that pound in 21 hour-long sessions.

4. Sex Improves Cardiovascular Health

Having sex twice or more a week reduced the risk of fatal heart attack by half for the men, compared with those who had sex less than once a month.

5. Sex Boosts Self-Esteem

Boosting self-esteem was one of 237 reasons people have sex, collected by University of Texas researchers and published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. One of the reasons people say they have sex is to feel good about themselves and Great sex begins with self-esteem, and it raises it. If the sex is loving, connected, and what you want, it raises it… JUST MAKE SURE it is CONNECTED LOVING and WHAT YOU WANT!

6. Sex Improves Intimacy

Having sex and orgasms increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which helps us bond and build trust. They found that the more contact, the higher the oxytocin levels. “Oxytocin allows us to feel the urge to nurture and to bond,” Higher oxytocin has also been linked with a feeling of generosity. So if you’re feeling suddenly more generous toward your partner than usual, credit the love hormone.

7. Sex Reduces Pain

As the hormone oxytocin surges, endorphins increase, and pain declines. So if your headache, arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms seem to improve after sex, you can thank those higher oxytocin levels.

8. Sex Reduces Prostate Cancer Risk

Frequent ejaculations, especially in 20-something men, may reduce the risk of prostate cancer later in life. It was found that men who had five or more ejaculations weekly while in their 20s reduced their risk of getting prostate cancer later by a third.

9. Sex Strengthens Pelvic Floor Muscles

For women, doing a few pelvic floor muscle exercises known as Kegels during sex offers a couple of benefits. You will enjoy more pleasure, and you’ll also strengthen the area and help to minimize the risk of incontinence later in life.To do a basic Kegel exercise, tighten the muscles of your pelvic floor, as if you’re trying to stop the flow of urine. Count to three, then release. I think that this exercise really works!

10. Sex Helps You Sleep Better

The oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep. And getting enough sleep has been linked with a host of other good things, such as maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure. Something to think about, especially if you’ve been wondering why your guy can be active one minute and snoring the next…

So get to it…. ;)

Bulls GAME tonight and a little listing!

First of all, the BULLS GAME IS ON TONIGHT! So excited to watch the first game of the series (Miami vs. Chicago!)… tomorrow I scheduled a massage using a gift certificate I got as a gift ;) …What a great gift to get!

I’m also going to be taking a Yoga class this  Tuesday at my local gym with a couple of friends, which I’m really excited for. I have tried the Yoga at the gym one other time and I felt completely loose after… I can’t wait until I try Bikram (hot Yoga) this summer. That is one thing I really want to do this summer.

I have started a list of some new places and things I’d like to try/do for this Summer

Fun Filled Weekend!

Today I woke up on the right side of the bed and got a whole bunch of errands done. I’m thinking about getting my toes fixed up in a little, gosh I love those pedicures! What I’m really looking forward to tonight is going out with a bunch of my girlfriends! LADIES NIGHT :)

Tomorrow I’ll be going to the Cubs game to catch up with some friends I haven’t seen in a while and I’m really excited my first Cubs game this year! I was supposed to go one back in April but played in basketball tournament instead. Tomorrow, before the Cubs game, I have a lunch date planned at one of my favorite restaurants  Uncommon Ground! :) … Sunday is also jam packed with activities and I’m attending church (something I’ve started to do a little bit more regularly! which I’m really happy about.)

The Bulls game on Tuesday was fun! D-Rose and Bulls took over and now we must face Miami on Sunday. I hope we can keep our momentum going and Win on Sunday…

Not quite long enough haha

The smirnoff bar was my friend at the United Center :)

I had fun time at the game, like I mentioned in the previous post I hadn’t been to a playoff game since Jordan played! It was a great feeling to be there.

I’ve been getting asked a bunch of questions recently a lot of which address some personal issues but I’d still be willing to share my thoughts and ideas with you guys.

Somethings many of you have asked me recently are

1) How tall are you and how much do you weigh?

  • I’m about 5’4 and weight currently 111 pounds ( a little on the small side for me now, i need to gain weight and get my booty back… it bugs me)… I thought being this small would make me look really really good, truth is, I think my favorite weight is 118 and toned! Need to start toning more

2) Do you work out regularly?

  • Yes I do. I make working out a priority in my life because I feel better after I do it. I used to feel guilty for working out because I thought by doing this everyday I was being selfish and not giving my time to a more worthy cause. My workouts never take over an hour and half and so I think giving myself about an hour to an hour and half of my time to myself daily is just fine :)

3) What was your favorite date you’ve ever had?

  • My favorite date was probably the first date I had with this one guy. I fell flat on my face, skinned my knees and palms while running back to the car from the bar we were at. I was running because it was pouring rain and didn’t want my hair to get wet haha… He helped me up and kissed me, it was absolutely perfect for a first date :)

4) Whats something you look forward to in your life?

  • One thing I look forward to the most in my life is having kids and starting a family. Although I’m only 21, I do think about this often because I love making people feel good. I can’t wait to have kids and take care of them, i’m such a nurturing person at heart. This is probably the same reason I want to be a teacher. I love seeing people grow and helping people get better in life in any way.  I’ve noticed that by helping others it helps me as well, it helps me to learn more about myself. I also want to be a devoted wife one day because I believe that the most amazing feeling in the world is to love someone and have their love in return. It’s an incredible feeling to know that your love for someone is as enriching to you as it is to them.

5) What is your idea of the perfect guy?

  • Someone who is just themselves around me, genuine people are the perfect people to have in your life and you can’t get more genuine than just being yourself and staying true to yourself.

Any other questions you guys have for me? E-mail me or comment on this post :)

HAPPY FRIDAY and Much love -Ang

Monday Funday!

Today I decided to lay off my legs a bit and do the elliptical for 45 mins instead of my usual treadmill work out… I stretched a bit afterward which always feels amazing!

I ended up watching the bulls game and hanging with some friends last night, it was a pretty brutal loss :/…

Oh well, hopefully tomorrow WHEN I’M AT THE GAME the outcome will be better! I’m so excited to go to a playoff game, the last playoff basketball game I saw was when M.J. was still playing… obviously that was quite some time ago.

I’m such a  Chicago fan..

Blogging has become a place where I enjoy describing the positive aspects of my life because it makes me remember how important it is to appreciate what I have. I believe everyone should have a place where they can go to let out their emotions and for me I really enjoy writing this blog. I’ve been pondering this thought for a while now: How it is possible that people who live a very simple life and aren’t constantly surrounded by new ideas, travel and technology can live their lives and seem to be fulfilled? Then there are those that have the world at their fingertips and are surrounded by the best of everything, travel to new lands and have continuous adventures yet never really seem satisfied? I believe it all comes down to appreciation. There are certain people in the world that need very little to be satisfied and those people are the ones worth surrounding yourself with. Those people appreciate life for the little things and those people know true happiness and all it has to offer.

I’ve been privileged to be brought up meeting all kinds of people; Those who are extremely wealthy and those who find it difficult to make ends meet each month. That being said, I’ve found that both types of people have unique problems and issues and not one single person’s life or family is perfect. I always believed that there was this “model” or “perfect” type of relationship that I was supposed to achieve with my significant other and a “perfect” type of family that I was supposed to have too. But I’m finding that each relationship and family has issues, some may be bigger than others but they still exist none-the-less and you know what? THAT’S OK!

Honestly, I’m finding that perfection, or the idea of perfection in life doesn’t exist, and the dang word should have never been made up in the first place!  I’ve always been a perfectionist, but I’m finding that perfection to me means one thing: being happy

Think about this…If you can say that you are happy with your life this very moment, your life is perfect! Each individual’s definition of  happiness differs because we all have unique desires and passions that make us happy. Thus, one person’s definition of a “perfect life” may be completely different from someone else’s. That’s why I’ve come to the conclusion that perfection is doing things that make YOU happy. In turn, YOU are in control of your happiness which makes you in control of your “perfection” as well.

But how can we be truly happy in life?

  • By doing things we truly love to do
  • Giving people the kind of love and respect we want in return
  • And by appreciating life every step of the way.

In order to be truly happy a person needs to separate themselves from anything or person that may be bringing negative into their positive world… I’m currently trying to differentiate between the negative “garbage” in my life and the positives. Its a difficult task but a necessary one…

Just remember… “Perfection”  is doing the things that make YOU happy because when you are happy you are the perfect version of yourself!!

Time to go out with some friends and watch the NBA playoffs… I hope you all take away that you are in control of your happiness and in control of creating the perfect life for yourself. Just make sure you are doing what you love to do each day and surrounding yourself with the people and things that make you happy… the rest will fall into place.
